Buy Springfield Now is an initiative out of the Mayor’s office in the City of Springfield that supports local homeowners and prospective homebuyers. A crucial element of our programming is providing knowledge and quality referrals to homeowners, as well as those wishing to become a homeowner. The Buy Springfield Now Initiative has helped close to 400 families in the past six years purchase homes in Springfield. We are very proud to announce the launch of this brand new, state-of-the-art website!

City of Springfield Down Payment Assistance Program
The Down Payment Assistance Program provides down payment and closing cost assistance ranging from $7,500 to
$35,000 for income-qualified, first-time homeowners purchasing a home in Springfield. The program provides a 0%
interest deferred-payment loan, forgiven over ten years if the owner continues to occupy the home as their principal
residence. There is no forgiveness during the first 5 years of ownership. Beginning with completion of the 6
th full year of
owner-occupancy, one-fifth of the loan will be forgiven each year. Upon 10 years of owner-occupancy, the entire loan
will have been forgiven.
Income Eligibility
Household income of the occupant household cannot exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), as determined
annually by HUD. The following limits are effective June 1, 2025:
1 Person: $67,000 3 Person: $86,100 5 Person: $103,350 7 Person: $118,650
2 Person: $76,550 4 Person: $95,650 6 Person: $111,000 8 Person: $126,300
Forgivable Loan Amount
Loan amounts are determined by the household income calculation and are as follows:
61% – 80% AMI 51% – 60% AMI 50% AMI or less
$10,000 $25,000 $35,000
Program Requirements
The applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
• Contribute a minimum of 1% of own funds toward purchase of the property
• Successfully complete homebuyer education program from a HUD-certified housing counselor at a HUDapproved housing counseling agency. The following local agencies provide approve homebuyer education:
Cambridge Credit Counseling Center, Holyoke Housing Authority, Springfield Partners for Community Action,
Valley Community Development Corporation, and Way Finders, Inc.
• Meet City underwriting standards.
• Landlord training course required for properties containing two or more units
• Current on City of Springfield taxes, fees, fines or municipal liens.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or have legal immigration status eligible to receive federal benefits
